MANdatory disCARDS

(a Father’s Day reflection) by Daniel J. Rucker

What childish things did you put away to be a man?

Action figures? Reading comics? Crying at cartoons?

Emotions? The truth? I gave up football. After

minutes. Sorry, football. Dad and I stared at the old

pigskin, where it fell after hitting my face. Oh, well.

Dad checked for a bruise. Not finding one, he cooked

dinner while I read comics in the kitchen. Our family

laughed while eating and watching The Muppet Show.

Last year one of my students told me he didn’t like

feminine things like reading. My daughters do. Also

Marceline the Vampire Queen and silly dancing. Me

too. I have a card that says I can drive, because I know

all the rules. Do I have a card that says I’m a true man?

Huh…  If so, it shows the rules I gave up to be human.
